As the Heroine for Breakfast adventure comes to a close, I’m really sad to be going home, but what an amazing time I’ve had over the last month, and this weekend really did top it off! Performing to sell out audiences at the Holden street theatre, with the added standing ovations and being nominated for two awards.  So what else has the Heroin(e) gang been up to? Yesterday, Kate, Hayley, Craig Lomas and I, went swimming with wild dolphins in the middle of the Australian sea, which was a great experience, however, the picture below shows my horror when asked to breathe through a snorkel.

Look how much I love snorkelling!

We also had a day out at Cleland Park which was fantastic, stroking the koala bears, and seeing the Tasmanian devils and dingo’s being fed, but what really topped the day off for me had to be feeding and petting the kangaroo’s, they were all very tame and friendly, and ate food from our own hands, this had to be one of my definite highlights of the trip.

On Friday morning we all headed down to the river in Adelaide city centre where we hired a bike for the day, we took a ride down to Henley beach which is beautiful and very scenic, all in all we ended up riding for 14 miles, we are still recovering from it now!

On Sunday night the Heroin(e) gang attended the Holden street theatres after show party, which was very eventful and very funny! Some of the theatre companies performed different mini sketches in the theatre, my favourite had to be the cast from Alvin Sputnik, as they wrote and performed two songs, one of which explained the meaning of all the different shows in the venue but in a witty and comical way.  We performed ‘that’s life’ and ‘one moment in time’ , Kate and Craig reversed roles to make it a very interesting watch to the audience, Craig then stepped in as a secondary Marilyn Monroe in one moment in time. It was great fun improvising and being able to make fun out of each other and our performances!

I really have had such an amazing time here in Australia and to be given a chance to perform at the Adelaide fringe festival has been a phenomenal experience,  there are so many things that have made my time here memorable, so here are a few more photographs that will sum up my trip, G’day Mate!

Well what a time we’ve had here in Adelaide… Fantastic reviews, sell out shows and even autograph signing?!! We’ve had such a wonderful response and I really don’t want it to end. Every night we have audience members who stay behind to chat to us… I love it when they’re shocked at the fact that I’m not actually American and love it even more when they say they’re coming again!

We have 1 week left to go now and i’m intending on enjoying every second, i’m especially looking forward to swimming with dolphins (if the weather cheers up)! Yes you read it right, us Brits have managed to bring over some good old English weather with us and the last few days have been a little chilly with heavy clouds and rain. I’m hoping the sun will come out again before we leave… I’ve been very sun sensible, but don’t want to come home without a tan.

Today has been a good day as we have received an excellent review from Fringe benefits, we’ve been waiting for it for a few days but it was worth it, even though we’ve been reviewed 26 times now I still get overwhelmed when we get a new one. To see the review follow the link below:

So apart from the show, what else have we been up to? Well we have met some very nice people since being here, all who have supplied us with gifts and generosity, drinks, cars, nintendo wii’s, nights out and someone even made us a classic Sunday roast with homemade Yorkshire Puddings… But apart from that we’ve seen the sights and animals of Adelaide! One of my favourite days was the day at the zoo, it houses the only Pandas in Australia, but more importantly, it had meerkats, cute, funny, inquisitive little meerkats who I kept going back to, the monkeys were cool too… But the meerkats stole the show!!

The show’s that we’ve seen have been great but my personal favourite was ‘Zeitgeist’ which was a physical theatre performance in the Garden of Unearthly delights, we’ve also see ‘The adventures of Alvin Sputnik… Deep sea Explorer’ which was really beautiful and a comedy show called ‘Red Bastard’ the cast found it even more funny when the ‘red bastard’ scooped me up and carried me into a tent, pretending to do bad things to me!

On Sunday we walked for 10 miles and visited Waterfall gully which was beautiful, we started climbing Mount Lofty but with no water and 3km to go we felt we should start heading back, my legs agreed and soon after it had a downpour where we had to use our beach towels for different uses… We dined with Geoff Hardy of Hardy’s wines on the wine tasting day that Holden Street Theatres took us on, and Craig McArdle took an unexpected dip in the lake, but i’m sure he’ll talk more about that in his blog!

Everyone at Holden Street Theatre has been fantastic and we cannot thank them enough… Hopefully we’ll see them again if we ever get the chance to bring our work across the world again.

Check back soon for blogs from the other cast members.

Heroin(e) for Breakfast in Adelaide… 1 Week Down… 3 To Go

February 23rd, 2010

So the Horizon Arts’ Heroin(e) for Breakfast team has been in Adelaide, South Australia for just over a week now and what a week its been.

Not wanting to start on a downer the cast performed their first show last Tuesday to a packed audience who had been eagerly awaiting our arrival. Louise Nunn from the Adelaide Advertiser was also in the audience so there was added pressure to put on a good show. Any worries that the cast may have had however were unfounded as we found out the next day that we had been awarded a 5* review. This was a fantastic start to our time here as the publication is comparable to the Scotsman newspaper in Edinburgh and 5* reviews are notoriously hard to come by. Read the review at: http://www.adelaidenow.com.au/entertainment/festivals/adelaide-fringe-review-heroine-for-breakfast/story-fn489zz9-1225831311150

The following day was the venue’s media day so we had an afternoon performance as well as an evening one. The matinee audience was full and the majority of them were from the local and national media. At this time we have had 3 further reviews published, none of which award a star rating but all are great reviews:

Jane Howard – Australian Stage

Adrian Miller – Rip It Up Magazine

Barry Lenny – Glam Adelaide

Also people have been talking on the Adelaide Fringe Discussion site talkfringe.com.au and so far they all love the show check out the comments or add your own at http://www.talkfringe.com.au/index.php?view=act&id=505

The Fringe Parade took place this week and although we knew that we were involved, we didn’t know how good the end result would be. Holden Street Theatres hired a classic Red open top Chevvy for our Marilyn to ride in whilst Tommy walked beside in nothing but a pair of union jack boxers sporting the slogan “Best Of British” Chloe and Edie also accompanied the vehicle giving out flyers and wristbands in the distinctive pink Heroin(e) tshirts, as did a host of local volunteers waving union jack flags.

There were many photographers and tv cameramen about so expect to see pics and videos popping up all over the web pretty soon.

Also this week the cast and Phil, the writer and director, were also interviewed for several local radio and tv stations and newspapers… Jay from Fresh FM interviewed Craig, Hayley and Phil in his usual crazy style live on air, and asked questions such as what was the longest Hayley had gone without a shower, and it Craig preferred to wear a jockstrap or go ‘freeball’ check back for the audio streams soon to find out what their answers were.

Phil also took part in a less crazy (but live all the same) interview with Amanda Blair at 5AA Radio (we hope to get a copy of this.. and will upload it when we do).

The cast also filmed a section of the show and Phil did an interview to camera with a well known local tv presenter for a channel 7 news feature. The cast also appeared in the channel 7 news as pert of the opening parade as mentioned above.

Look out for further blogs from the rest of the company, each of the cast will be blogging about their time here and what they’ve been up to so stay tuned.

Heroin(e) for Breakfast Late Show Success!!

August 29th, 2009

The extra showing of Heroin(e) for Breakfast took place last night (Fri 28/8) at 0:30 and went very well. The late night audience took to the piece very well and tears of laughter and sadness flowed as usual. Sadly we have now performed the penultimate show and the last performance takes place at the normal time of 11:40am tomorrow morning (Sunday 30/8). Most of the tickets are now sold but there is still the venue allocation remaining so if you haven’t seen the show yet, get in there early to snap up one of the last few tickets.

Once the Fringe is over, look out in the next week or so for some words from the cast of Heroin(e) for Breakfast about their Edinburgh experience. Also stay tuned for information on future performance of the show… it could be coming to a theatre near you soon!

Holden Street Theatre – Edinburgh Award 2009

August 29th, 2009

We are extremely proud to announce that Heroin(e) for Breakfast has been awarded the Holden Street Theatre Award in the final round of Fringe awards at the Assembly Rooms yesterday morning.

The relatively new award gives Heroin(e) for Breakfast an all expenses paid headline slot at the 50th Adelaide Fringe Festival in South Australia. The festival is the second largest in the world (second only to the Edinburgh Fringe) and runs from 19th February to 20th March 2010.

Needless to say, the cast and crew are still (to quote the play) “a frenzy of excitement and anticipation”. We obviously have a lot to sort out in the next few months but this could be the start of bigger things for the company so watch this space.

Horizon Arts would like to thank the following people who’s input has helped to make Heroin(e) for Breakfast such a runaway success: Richard Jordan, Ralph Dartford, Martin Shippen, Fraser Smith and the press team at the Underbelly, the Underbelly technical team from the Big Belly venue, Steve Rhodes… we can’t thank you enough!

We’re currently on the lookout for videos and photographs of the ceremony so if you find any let us know.
